Chevalier of Pentacles Fire of Fire. The credit card was fun to fill in: the first and last sets of four digits are the beginning and end of the arc of the sky that this card 'rules over' (21st degree of Scorpio to 20th degree of Sagittarius); the second set of four is the number of the hexagram TAC says it corresponds to, repeated; the third term is just four random digits. The expiration date is 29/17; Nov 29-Dec17 is when the Sun is in Ophiuchus, which lies between Scorpio and Sagittarius but is not officially part of the zodiac. The name of the credit card is just something I pulled out of my ass. 10 cards left for the show! Not a bad birthday present to myself. Like the previous card, this needs to go on FA when it comes back. Print available on Artspots. |

NEWS - Ur making it too easy. God, I come back from Kung Fu Panda(*) and the news has so many peculiar headlines my HEAD WOULD EXPLODE if I didn't have to go to bed.
- Fishermen survived for 15 hours by clinging to esky
- France embarrassed by rampant Wallabies
- Man rips head from Hitler wax figure in Berlin
All I can see for the the first one is Australians. That's all. The last one is just odd. And the middle one can be VERY bloody embarassing, let me tell you. Sometimes apparently a person looks a lot like a girl wallaby to a boy wallaby, I speak from experience walking through the kangaroo enclosure. (*) Kung Fu Panda was actually AWESOME and I am considering seeing it in the cinemas again despite the cost. Current Mood: hyper |

whoo! holygear my fav charecter in edenworld is Holy Gear Mashina, a mech that sort of looks like a shriner who is inspired abit offa renmazuo from xenogears. Holy is the creater of Edenworld and the technology behind the homiostasis on its surface. for the most part he is one of the oldest charecters in the story and is sort of off-kilter like the jotuns due to his exposure to the zeboin humans in the distant past. His body is basicly mostly a houseing for his brains/engine that take up 80% of his body. he is both a genious and a foreman and carrys on the religious history and ethics of the God "WAVE" the official God of the mashina. hes mostly badass except for the fact hes the size of a guardia and hes got a 'short mans" complex. speaking of brains, its actually a minority to have both your brains in your head. what i mean by this is that mashina's brains can exsist in multiple places on the body. Lyron may have his brains in his head but Beo prolly has one of his brains in his back, and terra has one in his chest. because of this (and this applys to guardia too) you can suffer a nasty attack to your face and it doesnt necessarily equate death. im playing with the idea of makeing the baby gouli on the side there the donate button. what do you guys think? pass or fail? |

ART - Alba the Owl So now Alba is entirely complete. She has been puttied, polished, and will soon be framed, but in truth the frame is not that important. The following photos under the cut give a good impression of the colours and lights of her. I am very proud of her - she is, after all, my third ever leadlight piece. It is, also, amazing how much you get damaged doing leadlight! Cuts, I think I poisoned myself a little with the finings, god knows what else...my fingernails are filthy after five or so washings, and I can't get the glazing putty out. Still, click the cut to see more images of Alba :) ( Show me the pretties! ) Current Mood: accomplished |

cycling at night Just now home from srakkt and sapphira_altair's 4th of July/Birthday Party. It was good, and they are such wonderful hosts, especially given the crowd. I made a curry potato salad that was really good, and I met up with hvincent who seemed to fit right in. That made me happy. Socializing and new friend stuff. It would've been perfect if Kris was there, but maybe next time. I'll see him tomorrow and that should be fun. I'll finally get to see/hear his band practice, maybe they need groupie t-shirts, hmm. I'm a lightweight drinker. It hasn't gotten any better either. I managed 3/4 of a beer and was slow and dour for the rest of the night. Alcohol is a depressant and that was starting to assert itself when I decided I should head home. Riding home at night is so wonderful and restorative, it's really the best time for it. I have been doing okay lately. If I stop to really think about it; everything is okay right now. Nothing is -perfect-, but I really have no cause to complain. People are interesting. |

Friday Part Two: "Creep", analysis. Speaking of beautifully entertaining control freaks, I found this long slow live version of Prince covering Radiohead's classic "Creep".
- "Creep" (Live @ Coachella 2008) - Prince (9:07)
| THOM YORKE LYRICS (Original) | PRINCE LYRICS (Cover) |
When you were here before Couldn't look you in the eye You're just like an angel Your skin makes me cry You float like a feather In a beautiful world And I wish I was special Youre so fucking special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I dont belong here.
I don't care if it hurts I want to have control I want a perfect body I want a perfect soul I want you to notice When I'm not around You're so fucking special I wish I was special
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo. What the hell am I doing here? I dont belong here.
She's running out again, She's running out She's run run run running out...
Whatever makes you happy Whatever you want You're so fucking special I wish I was special...
But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo, What the hell am I doing here? I don't belong here. I don't belong here.
|
When I was here before, You couldn't look me in the eye. I'm just like an angel; My skin makes you cry. I float like a feather In this beautiful world. You wish you were special, So do I.
You're a ... You're a liar. What are you doing here? You don't belong here.
You don't care if it hurts, You just want to have control. You want a perfect body. You want a perfect soul. You want me to notice When you're not around. I wish you were special - yes I do, Because I think you're special.
Maybe I'm just a ... Who's to say (unintelligble) What are we doing here? We don't belong here.

He flips the pronouns around, so that instead of it being this weird, sketchy, self-loathing, loving confessional, it becomes this wierd, sketchy, self-glamourizing, loving and ultimately compassionate accusation.
The volta (this is a technical term used to talk about poetry, it means a jump or shift in direction of the emotions or thought) is flipped about too. In the original version "Yorke" speaks about how special, wonderful and beautiful the other person is and how awful he is, but then he says "you're so fucking special" which reveals this edge to show that it's not all bliss and pedestals, but that there could be some exasperation, resentment and jealousy as well.
From that point into the next verse he speaks in more sadistic and pathological terms about not caring if it hurts, wanting control, etc.
After she freaks out and runs away, he shifts back to a desperate, concilliatory tone, with "whatever you want", etc.
In flipping the perspective Prince pushes the volta back further into the song because he outwardly agrees with the "Yorke" character at first in a softly self-righteous tone, acknowledging their differences, that he doesn't belong, etc.
In Prince's version there's only one complicated volta and it comes at the end of the second verse where he recognizes that "Yorke" is sadistic, shallow and manipulative.
Instead of "running out again" in rejection, "Prince" reveals that he secretly thinks "Yorke" is special. But it's doubly revealing because they both know he isn't. "Yorke" is a jerk and they each know it, but at least "Yorke" is being honest to himself, while "Prince" exists in a state of rosy-lensed denial.
"I wish you were special, because I think you're special."
He is lying to himself: He wants "Yorke" to actually be special because that would validate his faith in him, and his identity as the Good Guy/Angel who sees the good in other people. But if "Yorke" really is awful, then "Prince's" faith is currently and knowingly misplaced: it is a self-deception.
So he then includes himself in the chorus. And although it's mostly unintelligible, if it mirrors the first chorus, then he is likely indicating that he is a liar as well. They both don't belong "here", which might as well be Heaven. It's an interesting bind to be somebody that wants see the good in people, when confronted with somebody who is an admitted sadistic, shallow, manipulative "creep". Is it still useful, or right to view them as good? How is that a virtue? "Yorke" is fucked up, broken and needs help; he's not alright, and harboring that view isn't really noble or acknowledging his situation.
Anyway, there's no third verse, because no sooner does "Prince" start to doubt that he deserves to belong Here then the music stalls. The song ends with ominous, rumbling thunder. Both have been cast out, perhaps? | Current Mood: Hmm. |

Friday Part One: Blossom Dearie Okay, some appreciation now for the lovely, lovely voice of the charmingly named Blossom Dearie (and it's not even a stage name, aww). She is still with us (b.1926), if Wikipedia is to be believed; I could still send some fan mail :) Although her singing is quite stellar, and I'd put her right up there with other "American Songbook" bop jazz greats, Blossom was never as popular in this country as outside it. During the age of Macarthyism and the Cold War, she left the U.S. and made her fortune in Paris. American Jazz was still shiny like the Internet, there. And it was easier for her to stand out and find the kind of audience she never could here. Her style is blithe and sophisticated. She has a thin, clean voice; it's frankly not as powerful as others of her generation that are better known, and she was always a little too twee to be taken seriously. If you'll look at her myspace page(!) you can read between the lines in her bio and pick up on some slight bitterness (All she chooses to share on her myspace is something she did for Schoolhouse Rock ages ago). God bless the French, they love her. I do too; some sunny days, she's just what I need to hear. Here's all the Blossom Dearie that I have, I like to listen to her while I'm cooking, AND I AM COOKING :) (I'm just saying.)- Just One Of Those Things (2:03)

The Wall Okay, it's like this: The Wall is a beautifully realized and articulate work that has about as much to do with pro-Nazi sentiment as a carburetor does with orange marmalade. I was going to lauch willy nilly into What Chris Thinks 'Bout It, but apparently it's been done. And it's a good read for any fan of the film/music/et cetera, I think. Yeah, so if all you see/remember are the marching hammers, knock it off. Like, right now. Fundamental literalism is not your friend. M e t a p h o r. Anime Meh-xpo That was quicker than I thought.
-When the first surprise you get at a con is the $20 parking fee for the convention center, the day isn't going well. If you decide to go to the con, park in the non-state lots north of the convention center, which were charging around $6 to $7. It's a few minutes walk, but exercise is good for you lardass.
-The best deal in the cafeteria at the LACC is cereal and milk. $2.45, which is almost tolerable. Otherwise, eat out.
-One plus for the con with the new prereg system. Took less than 20 minutes from going into the hall to walking out with badge and swag bag.
-One minus for putting the line for the exhibi hall outside the building in 80 degree heat, when the LACC is loaded with empty air-conditioned halls that could have been used instead. Whatever dog-fucking shitgobbler came up with that one needs to be set on fire and tossed off the top of Staples Center.
-I spent more time in line to get into the exhibit hall than I did inside the thing. I entered at 12:30 and was on the road home by 2 PM. The problem is that 80% of the dealers are selling in one of three categories: manga, DVDs, and toys. And in those categories, they were all selling THE SAME SHIT. "Well, the last six tables were selling Naruto episodes, let's see what's over here. Why, it's Naruto episodes!"
-There were three booths I did more than just walk past: 1. Hornsmythe. Calvin's an acquaintence of mine, and he does some of the West Coast furcons. Great stuff for sale. Clothes, hand-crafted horn items, small metal things. I dropped by to wave hello and he barely had time to wave back, since he was going the kind of land office business that eluded his neighbors. Good for him. 2. VG Cats. I wish I'd have remembered to bring my small sketchbook for him to work in. Ah well. Another person who was busy when all around him were not. 3. Tea Club. Same here. Might have had something to do with all the great stuff she has for sale that's new. New things, what a concept!
-The anime implosion is going on bigtime. Tokyopop was absent, ADV had a handful of tables instead of that huge display of theirs, and most of the big names except Bandai were running smaller booths. Fire sales seemed to be the order of the day, and many dealers seemed scared. This is what happens when you grab anything and everything from Japan and plop it on a disc or between covers. You flood the market, then you get to sit back and blame fansubbers for it falling apart. lulz.
All in all it was money mostly wasted. Next year I will get an exhibit only pass, park well away from the convention center, bring a lunch, bring a portable seat, and laugh at all the attempts by Asians to cosplay an Italian plumber. |

FEMINISM - Get your rage on Updates from around the Web on Feminism: The Backlash in Britain. Article summary: Rape convictions have dropped (to roughly one in twenty). Rape incidents have gone up (by 247% between 1991 and 2004). More people now believe women are partly or totally responsible for being raped if they are drunk or not clothed 'appropriately' (according to a survey, incidentally, that I saw a few months back that the article writer also saw apparently given what she has quoted - roughly a third of the respondants in Ireland thought a woman was ALWAYS responsible for her rape) . People generally believe women make false rape accusations. The three most important women's shelters in Britain collectively have less income than the aging donkey sanctuary. There is an obsession with 'women gone wild'. The five most loved people in Britain are male. Of the five most hated, four are women. Lapdance clubs are opening at a rate of nearly one a week in Britain. Coverups. On July 19, 2005, Pvt. Johnson was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head at her base near Balad, Iraq. Though her body bore evidence of an assault and rape, including a broken nose and chemical burns around her genitals, and there was no evidence that Pvt. Johnson was suffering from emotional distress, the Army classified her death as a suicide. She apparently also glued white gloves to her hands before dying. These just happened to hide burns on her hands. She had been bitten. The Army said she killed herself. Her father is on the rampage, according to what I can find, and says he doesn't intend to let this go silent. More power to him. The 11 year old Romanian girl who was raped by her uncle (reported as 'raped' by a major newspaper, as though an 11 year old can consent to sex in a country where she is under the age of consent, because scare quotes aren't offensive at all) has been allowed to terminate the pregnancy. While some Christian Orthodox groups are protesting, the Roman Orthodox Church has said the decision must be up to the family, not others. And a personal observation. I have a news filter which grabs articles on 'Steampunk', 'Goth', and 'Feminism' online for me. The vast majority of all 'Feminism' articles are on how Feminists are evil, cold bitches who need one of the following: Re-education, to shut up, to die, to be raped, to stop corrupting young women, to stop converting everyone into lesbians, to stop hating men, to, to, to... Time to disengage there, too depressing. The Goth one is mostly amusing because it keeps saying things like: The Emo Culture (that is, Goth), or emos (Goths), or 'Emotional Punks' (aka: goths)...oh man. Nothing like an evolving concept!
